The team at Beauty Despite Cancer comes from a variety of backgrounds, providing personal and professional skillsets that allow us to deliver wellbeing, knowledge and information to cancer patients and cancer survivors with care, compassion and integrity.
For each member of the team, the work we do at Beauty Despite Cancer and our sister company, Jennifer Young Training, is about nurturing and empowering individuals going through cancer treatment, to feel a little better and to find the mental and physical support and understanding they need and deserve during a challenging time.
The woman behind Beauty Despite Cancer is Jennifer Young. She is also the founder of our sister company – the eponymous Jennifer Young Training, which provides dedicated courses and qualifications for therapists and healthcare professionals, so they can deliver touch therapies to cancer patients safely and with confidence. Jennifer is involved in all aspects of the business, and her background reflects her passion behind it. She has a BSc (Hons) in biology and is an experienced microbiologist, she is a qualified and practicing nutritional therapist, an associate member of the Royal Society of Medicine, a qualified aromatherapist, is a beauty therapist and a product formulator. She has two post-graduate qualifications in health-related fields, has been accepted by the courts as an expert witness for occupational health cases and has been active in medical research. She is also the author of Recognise Yourself - a beauty and wellbeing guide for those living with and beyond cancer.
Keating, Social Media Manager
Keating’s official title is Social Media Manager, but in reality we would be lost in most departments without her. A vital part of branding, digital marketing and social media, she has worked in the business both formally and informally since it began. It was the inspiration she found here - giving voice and support to the stories of individuals with cancer and working alongside a vibrant team - that made her choose to study International Business with Chinese at university.
Helen, Marketing Director
Our Marketing Director, Helen, joined us from an illustrious background spanning a postgraduate diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Programme. Having founded and run her own online skincare retailer alongside her husband for nearly 10 years, she came to us having sold it in 2020. Her understanding of the skincare industry is invaluable in communicating the information and messages we want to share in order to support the Beauty Despite Cancer community.
Kevin, Digital Marketing & Ecommerce Manager
The keeper of the keys when it comes to our website and digital marketing, Kevin came to us following a career break to be a stay at home dad and was inspired to join the team following his own family experiences with cancer. Other than being a superhero parent, Kevin has a BSc in technology, and has previously worked taking care of all things online for a global travel company and building mobile apps and websites for the likes of National Express and Shearings. In short, it’s thanks to him that you can actually buy our products, so we’re extremely grateful to have him on board.
Aklima, Digital Marketing Executive
With a BA in English and Education, Aklima is the perfect person to help communicate who we are and what we do to our community. Her naturally giving personality has seen her work on lots of charity and community building projects ranging from Food Bank and Homelessness Aid Pack collections to teaching English at local refugee and asylum community centres. However, it was the real stories of people who have faced cancer with resilience and strength that inspired her to want to be part of our team, and we couldn’t be happier to have her!
Bonnie, Content Writer
Our Content Writer, Bonnie, joins the team with nearly 10 years in the spa and wellbeing industries. A passionate storyteller, her background has taken her from a BA in history to journalism and some of London’s leading content marketing agencies. However, it’s the work she has done with business leaders to help share information on the challenges within the spa industry for anyone with serious illnesses, that has been her greatest inspiration.
Paige, Office Manager
Paige is at the operational heart of the company, managing the office, the day-to-day running of dispatches, the lab, the training school and customer service. Having left a career in retail and returned to work after time out having her boys, her caring nature shows through in everything she does - keeping us all in line and making sure things run smoothly. She is also an incredible advocate for our brand - a true skincare enthusiast, she is passionate about the difference products can make each day when someone is living with cancer.
Grace, Office Administrator
Working alongside Paige, Grace is part of the core team ensuring products are dispatched, packaged and processed for our clients, on time and to the standards we value. Having sought to join the team because of her own family experiences with cancer and her empathy for the challenges individuals face at that time, in everything she does she brings the kind of care you could only wish for your friends and family when they’re in need of nurturing. Her approach is the definition of the phrase ‘sent with love’.
Beth, Training School Manager
With a BA in American Studies from Keele University and an MA in journalism from Staffordshire University, Beth’s communication skills make her the perfect person to convey the values of our brand. She is part of the core team running our Training School, having come to us whilst pursuing a career in journalism. When she discovered us she realised that it would be the perfect fit alongside her passion for writing and skincare – “a specialist skincare company that has products and content that is really doing some good in this world, and is helping people though the toughest times of their lives – a company after my own heart.” Thank goodness she felt that way because we couldn’t be without her.
Jo, Lab Manager
The knowledge, expertise, care and consistency that Jo brings to our training school is unparalleled. Having trained as a medical evaluator in America, she came to the UK with her work and discovered a passion for biomechanics. Following extensive training, she worked in the industry for more than 30 years, developing her skills and eventually delivering prescription writing courses for bespoke orthoses to healthcare professionals, finally becoming Operations Director for what is now a global company. Through her work, she discovered a tremendous satisfaction in the way that the right prescription could enhance someone’s life. It’s that tangible benefit that the right products can bring to someone who is suffering, as well as a personal interest in health and wellbeing, that drives her to help create courses that make a real difference to client and therapist experiences today.
